1. SPOTLIGHTING NEW ARTISTS
Since the re-opening last month, Artwell has received many new artist submissions. We are pleased to promote the following new outstanding member artists on display this month:

Jessica Perry
Painting - Denville, NJ
"My work is about my life and helps me communicate feelings that I cannot articulate in words. It is a physical model for the stages, emotions, and dilemmas in my life, documenting the progress and resistance I experience."

Dana Ellyn Kaufman
Photography - Washington, DC
"My photographs embrace contemporary excesses; piles of food, discarded objects, and the surplus of decorative flowers and plants. I am drawn to the harmony and irony of everyday objects and scenes."

3. THE LEEWAY FOUNDATION: PROMOTING WOMEN IN THE ARTS
The Leeway Foundation was established in 1993 to promote the welfare of women and benefit the arts. Leeway supports individual women artists, arts programs and arts organizations, focusing on the Greater Philadelphia region, in order to help them achieve personal and community transformation. They envision a world where art is recognized as an essential part of the human experience; where it is employed and respected as a powerful catalyst for personal and social change; and where women artists are empowered, recognized and valued.

The Leeway Foundation's primary grant program recognizes excellence and achievement by Philadelphia area women artists and writers. Awards are given in a different artistic discipline each year. The program is comprised of "Awards to Emerging Artists" and "Awards to Established Artists".

4. TECHNIQUES: BOOK REVIEW, "HOW TO PAINT LIKE THE OLD MASTERS"
Sheppard, Joseph. How to Paint Like the Old Masters. 1983: Watson-Guptill. NY
A leading contemporary painter reconstructs the classic oil painting techniques of the old masters. Step by step, the book details how artists like Durer, Titian, Caravaggio and Rubens painted portraits and figures. The methods described cover a full spectrum, from direct painting (alla prima) to elaborate underpainting and glazing methods providing essential tips such as the oils, colors and brushes used.

This is an excellent book, but not for beginners. For more details:

5. GET INVOLVED! ARTWELL VOLUNTEER COMMITTEES FORMING
Founded in 1995, Artwell was one of the first community focused, free online resources for fine artists. Today, Artwell has a national member base of over 6500, and is still one of only a few free sites on the Internet providing rich content with an exclusively fine arts focus.

We are looking for knowledgeable and dedicated volunteer leaders to help us grow our programs and PR efforts. If you are passionate about the arts and community based support of artists in their careers, please send your resume and contribution interests to volunteering@artwell.com

We are targeting the virtual committee formation (launch) for mid September, 2002.
